4. Cropped Prints | Show Entire Image

Cropped Prints

Digital images, like 35 mm negatives, are rarely the same shape as the paper the image is printed on. As a result, the image must be cropped to fit the paper on which it is printed.

The KODAK Gallery refers to this process as Show Entire Image.

To avoid cropping of your Prints, check the Show Entire Image check box when editing your individual print settings. The image will not be cropped; however, white borders will appear on two sides of the Print if the image does not exactly match the aspect ratio of the print size being ordered.

To apply Show Entire Image for Prints within your order:

  1. Upload your photos.
  2. Add the photos to the photo tray, and then click Continue.
  3. Click Zoom & Crop below each image you would like to edit.
  4. Check the check box next to Show Entire Image, and then click Save.

Note: Crop settings are not adjusted by Color Management.

5. Color of Print order

By default, we use KODAK PERFECT TOUCH Technology to reduce dark shadows and make colors more vibrant. Occasionally, KODAK PERFECT TOUCH Technology does not improve color.

To determine if your image will print better with or without KODAK PERFECT TOUCH Technology, we recommend previewing your Prints prior to placing your order.

To preview your Prints:

  1. Upload your images, and then drag them to the photo tray.
  2. Click Buy Prints.
  3. You will be brought to the Create Your Print Order page.
  4. From within the Create Your Print Order page, click Zoom & Crop next to each image you would like to preview.

6. Digital image resolution

Digital Image Resolution
Digital image resolution is the size of your image, measured in pixels, or "picture elements." A high-resolution image (i.e., 1600 x 1200 pixels) will result in a better printed photo than a low-resolution image (i.e., 320 x 240 pixels), if all other factors are equal. If the resolution is too low for the print size you choose, the photo will look fuzzy and indistinct. We recommend that you always use the highest resolution setting on your camera to ensure ideal printing results.

What do the Gallery's minimum megapixel recommendations mean?

The number of megapixels in the image determines the final print quality. To determine the number of megapixels contained within an image, multiply its width by the height in pixels and divide by 1 million.

Low-resolution Warning
A low-resolution warning will appear next to any image that is below the recommended resolution for that size photo slot. The Gallery will print your photos at the size you choose; however, if the image resolution is too low for the chosen print size, the printed photo may look blurred and/or pixelated.

Using photos below this recommended resolution may result in printed images that are fuzzy, washed out or pixelated. Keep in mind that the preview images you see on your computer screen do not accurately reflect the quality of the printed photos.

DPI (dots per inch) and PPI (pixels per inch)
In digital photo-finishing, DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch) is not relevant and will not affect your image file.

For example, an image that is 1024 x 768 at 100 DPI is the exact same file and has the same resolution as an image that is 1024 x 768 at 500 DPI. Both files contain a total of 786432 pixels in a grid that has 1024 pixels on one side and 768 pixels on the other side. A more reliable measure for digital photo-finishing is the actual resolution, which represents the number of pixels that make up the image.

What is aspect ratio?
Each print size has its own slightly different rectangular shape (known as the aspect ratio). For example, a 4 x 6" Print is proportionately taller and narrower than an 8 x 10" Print.

To make your image fit these varying print shapes, photo labs usually enlarge the image slightly and crop out what doesn't fit.

To avoid cropping of your Prints, check the Show Entire Image check box when editing your individual print settings. The image will not be cropped; however, white borders will appear on two sides of the Print if the image does not exactly match the aspect ratio of the print size being ordered.

What is a pixel and megapixel?
Pixels are the basic building blocks of every digital image; the more pixels in your photos, the better the Print appearance.

A megapixel means one million pixels and is the unit of image-sensing capacity in a digital camera, or the amount of information the camera can capture. Generally, the more megapixels a camera has, the better the print resolution will be. For example, a 5 x 7" Print from a 6-megapixel camera will have more information, and therefore more detail, than one from a 2-megapixel camera.
